Lives are being restored daily through Neighborhood Centers’ Stay Connected Texas, a program that offers long-term disaster case management to Hurricane Ike survivors. To date, more than 10,000 individuals and families have been served through disaster case management services. Homes have been repaired, furniture replaced and a new sense of hope for the future has permeated across Southeast Texas.
Residents in Harris County, who were affected by Hurricane Ike and have ongoing needs, may still benefit from Stay Connected services, thanks to an extension by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and FEMA. The agency is also serving Ike survivors through Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) funding through the Houston-Galveston Area Council. The program helps to provide home repairs, rebuild, unmet needs and other services for people who have been affected by Ike.
Neighborhood Centers Inc. established the Stay Connected program in 2005 following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The program provides a compassionate response to both material and emotional needs of people who have been affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes. Staff service connectors connect participants with services and resources that will assist them in the long-term recovery process.
The Stay Connected Texas program was expanded through a grant from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and is funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. It was started in response to the needs of thousands of people in Harris County who were affected by Hurricane Ike, with ongoing needs.
Successful outreach strategies have also been developed by our Stay Connected Texas partners who include SER-Jobs for Progress, Boat People SOS, Inc., Houston Works and City of Houston-Focused Care Project, and weekly press coverage through our media partners helps to get the word out. Inter-faith Ministries also provides outreach opportunities.
Helping to meet the needs of families and individuals, still recovering from Ike, is a collaborative effort, through Neighborhood Centers Inc., that is far from forgotten.
